GALLUP BROTHERS PEG HEAD COOT

The Gallup brothers (Paul, Dick & Bruce)

Paul Gallup owned The Premier Millworks Company located on Birdneck Road in Virginia Beach in the 1940’s. All three brothers participated in making the coot decoys. The lathe machine made the spindle head patterns for the heads and the bodies were chopped from juniper fenceposts. A nail was added to support the canvas on the bill of each coot. All three brothers built cabins on stilts out in front of Davis Landing on Ships Cabin Road on Back Bay where they hunted.
